Summary: Although not included among the Three Mighty Warriors, Benaiah was as famous as they and held in greater honor. He was in charge of David’s bodyguard. Among the Thirty Mighty Warriors was Uriah, murdered by David to cover his adultery with Uriah’s wife.

Questions: How am I a mighty warrior? Am I surrounded by mighty warriors?

On reflecting on today’s passage I first thought I was a mighty warrior of 임승조, who oversees Whimoon setting, the transformation of the Whimoon school gymnasium to a worship hall for Sunday and Wednesday worship. I am part of the setting team on Saturday. I arrive earliest to do the heaviest physical parts.

 Pulling one of the basketball nets to the opposite end of the gym by myself and pushing the mobile staircase to its place in front of the stage is like striking down two of Moab’s warriors. Pulling the water machines from the storage at the end of the gym all the way to their place outside the building is like going into the pit to kill a lion. I perform many more exploits in the hour before other team members arrive to unroll the carpets and set up the chairs.

 On second reflection, however, I realized I was the one surrounded by mighty warriors of prayer and encouragement who protect me from exalting myself: my wife, my family, my mokja, my mogwons, and the whole Wooridle community.

 My ability to work on Saturday is God’s grace. The Lord gives me the physical strength to be of service to him and my spiritual community while the mighty warriors of my community protect my spirit and keep me persevering in my faith.

Application: Keep working. And pray for all those who create the circumstances and atmosphere for me to worship in.

Prayer: Lord, it is not my qualification that has made me one of the mighty warriors of your kingdom but your grace. Forgive me my pride in thinking my strength is mine, not yours, to kill a lion in a pit.
